At least six persons were electrocuted at a filling station by the side of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Morzal area of Belabo upazila in the district yesterday. They were identified as Barkat Mia, 20, of Ashuganj village in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria district, Hakim Mia, 50, of Kamalpur in Bhakirav upazila, Kawsar at Kalipur in Bhairab upazila, Awal Mia, 20, Zakaria, 22, Abul Fazal,30, and Shahjahan Mia, 25, of Ramnagar village in Raipura upazila.
According to Raipura police, the Lal Mia filling station owner, Abdus Sadek, who is also the secretary of the Raipura thana Awami League, hired some labourers to remove a makeshift car garage, Tabbasum Servicing Centre, near the filling station.
When eight to 10 labourers were carrying a 20-foot iron ladder, it came into contact with an 11,000-volt electric cable and five labourers were electrocuted and three injured. Abul Fazal, one of the injured, died on way to the Narisngdi zilla hospital.
The OC of Raipura police station, Delowar Hossain, rushed to the spot. The bodies were sent to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
