Community participation stressed to stop corruption

Terming transparency and accountability as the precondition to democracy speakers at a views-sharing meeting have underscored the need for forging social movement and resistance against corruption to build good governance in the society, reports BSS.
They put emphasis on community participation in the campaign for prevention of corruption to make it successful. “There is a need to establish integrity everywhere in the society particularly socially and politically,” they added.
Conscious Citizens Committee (CCC), founded with inspiration by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), organised the meeting titled “Social Movement against Local Level Corruption: Prospects and Challenges” at Master Chef Restaurant in the city.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury addressed the meeting as chief guest while TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman spoke as focal person and moderated the discussion with Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Pro-VC of Rajshahi University and CCC Convener, in the chair.
Chairman of Rajshahi Eduation Board Prof Dr Abul Hayat, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Hazrat Ali, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Associate Prof Awal Hossain Mollah from Public Administration Department of Rajshahi University also spoke.
The speakers viewed that wide-range participation of community people in the service sector could curb corruption and underlined the need for enhancing empowerment of the community people so that they could raise voice against any sort of corruption.
They emphasized on making both the government and non- government service-delivery activities transparent and accountable for freeing those from corruption.
Local level corruption could be reduced to a greater extent through ensuring transparent, accountable and responsive administration together with free flow of information, the speakers added.
They have stressed for educating and inspiring young generation especially the students with honesty, good moral character and patriotism in building a corruption-free society.
More than 120 people representing various government and non-government organizations and other stakeholders were present at the meeting.
