Commerce Minister and Awami League Advisory Council Member Tofail Ahmed yesterday urged the international community to stand by Rohingya people from Rakhine State in Myanmar, reports BSS.
“Bangladesh has sheltered the Rohingya refugees on humanitarian grounds but we have some limitations . . . It's quite impossible to carry on this huge burden of Rohingya people alone,” he told newsmen after exchanging post-Eid greetings with the officers and employees at his Bangladesh Secretariat office. The senior minister urged the international community to stand by Rohingya Muslims who have been entering Bangladesh's territory being the worst victims of the atrocities in Myanmar since last few years.
He was very critical of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and said, "The world people have already witnessed the 'symbol of peace' (atrocities) at Rakine state from where huge people, including older and children, are fleeing their homeland (Myanmar)."
Replying to a question, the commerce minister said, "Myanmar is nearer neighbour of Bangladesh, so it's not very easy to cut off diplomatic and trade relations with Myanmar."
About the upcoming general election, he said the Jatiya Sangsad polls will be held before January 29 in 2019 and within stipulated 90 days.
“The government will extend all-out necessary cooperation to the Election Commission in holding the election in the stipulated timeframe, no matter whether BNP takes part in it or not, he added.
