Warner happy to hit a ton
in a challenging situation

David Warner curbed his natural aggression to hit his slowest century amid a nasty humidity in which batting was the most difficult task for a batsman, outside from the sub-continent.

But the opener who became sixth Australian batsman to hit back-to-back century in Asia after Bob Simpson, Alan Border, Damien Martyn, Mike Hussey and Michael Clarke thought the hard-earned century would go in vain if not his side win the match.

“It is satisfying for myself but at the end of the day we're here to win games,” Warner said. “I’m doing myself and the team as much favours as I can by trying to put on runs, as everyone else is. At the moment we've got a lead of 72 I think it is, so we've got to try and capitalise on that tomorrow morning to push forward for maybe a hundred (run lead).”

“It was quite challenging obviously with the humidity. It definitely felt a lot hotter than … 30-odd degrees. That's what we train for. That time off helped us a lot to gain some momentum and miles in the legs to prepare us for not just here but for the upcoming summer. We talk about having some things in the bank, that's what we did. It's paid off so far.”

In the last two tours in India, Warner fared badly, prompting his critics to raise their voice. Registering his successive century in sub-continental Asia, Warner shut the mouth of the critics and proved that he came off age.

“As I said before it’s a tough environment to come out and try to play your shots and play your natural game. You have to find a way and for me it’s taken almost 16, 17 Tests in these conditions to work out what my game plan is and stick to it,” he said.

In terms of facing deliveries, it was Warner’s second longest innings. Just once he played more than 234 balls that he did face yesterday, was against New Zealand in 2015 in Perth when he negotiated 286 deliveries. In that match, he got his career best 253.

“It (the slowest ton) also is dictated by the fields that they set and what they're trying to achieve as well. You pretty much felt in from ball one with the fields that they set, they didn't really have any attacking men around the bat compared to last game,” he opined.

“It allowed me just to rotate the strike and not really have any need to leave your crease all the time. I felt the lengths they bowled were easily adaptable for myself. Not easy, but for myself I was able to get into a comfortable position frequently.”

Warner however rated this century as the best.

“I think from a patience point of view, definitely (it is the best). I always talk about trying to bat long periods for time in these conditions and by far that's the hottest I've ever played in. it was quite challenging to be out there. Coming off yesterday, it was every minute that I was out there. We were out there for 100 overs the day before.”
