Re-excavation of canals, ponds

We should protect the wetlands for our survival

It is heartening to note that the government has taken steps to re-excavate 921 canals and 1,611 large and small ponds in the country's 56 districts to encourage rural youths for fish and poultry farming. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, re-excavation of canals and ponds will create employment opportunities for youths of poor families in rural areas that will bring dynamism in the rural economy. It will also ensure availability of surface water for rural people. The authorities will also take steps to plant trees on the banks of these canals and ponds. There is no denying the fact that the wetlands play a vital role in protecting country’s environment, flora and fauna, bio-diversity and ecological balance.

Many canals and ponds have dried up and are lying unutilised throughout the country. Those should be re-excavated and brought under fish cultivation. Provision of bank loans on easy terms and conditions and adequate training to the fish culturists, particularly jobless youths, can give impetus in this regard. There are immense opportunities for undertaking integrated fish farming with poultry birds, vegetables and fruits in different places in the country. This can contribute a lot towards meeting up the gradually increasing demands of fish, vegetables and fruits.    Over the past few years Bangladesh has increased fish production considerably. Due to undertaking various fish-friendly programmes and technical training of fishermen and entrepreneurs, fish production rose.

Fish, poultry, vegetables and fruits meet various requirements of human body. The country is crisscrossed by scores of rivers, marshes, canals and ponds. Fishes are available in these water bodies aplenty. Apart from natural breeding of fishes in different water bodies, fishes are grown by undertaking pisciculture projects.  Scores of such projects have sprung up in different places of the country in recent times. Many people, particularly jobless rural youths, have become financially solvent through undertaking pisciculture. This has also contributed to employment generation considerably. More youths should be engaged in such projects.

What is needed now is providing institutional and organisational support, training facilities and technical support for sustainable fish farming. Training and technical support would help to increase the knowledge of farmers, improve productivity and reduce risks. Moreover, applied research in areas such as small indigenous fish farming in wetlands may need to be given particular attention, considering nutritional benefits among household members including children and women. There is no alternative to exploit the potential fully. We should protect the wetlands for our survival.
