Mehedi’s expensive hesitation
Bangladesh were dismissed for 305 in the first innings but it could have been much better had Mehedi would bat sometimes more. However it was a tough day for the young all-rounder who also couldn’t excel in bowling. He was run-out on 11 in the first session of the day. The hesitation for second runs when it was on the card resulted in run-out dismissal as David Warner collected the ball from backward point and hit the stump directly.
Warner’s resolution
David Warner survived twice—on 52 and 73 when firstly Mominul Haque dropped him at short square leg off the delivery of Taijul Islam and secondly Mushfiqur Rahim missed a stumping chance off Mehedi Hasan Miraj. The delivery off Mehedi kept so low that Mushfiqur couldn’t hold the ball as it struck his leg. If he could hold it, he definitely would break the stump as Warner left the crease by mile. The pitch however was much easier but the odd deliveries kept low which was challenging for the batsman to negotiate well. It needed utmost determination to deal with those sort of deliveries and it was where the significance of Warner’s innings lied. Specially a delivery of Taijul Islam what definitely could get Warner when he was on 47.
Smith’s consistency
Smith couldn’t hit half-century in any of the innings in the Dhaka Test. But he came back strongly in the second Test, hitting 58, his 21st half-century that helped Australia stabilize the innings after the early loss of Matt Renshaw. In the process, Smith confirmed one thing that he would hit at least one fifty in the 18 Test series at a stretch since his debut in 2011. Smith so far played 56 Test in 18 Test series. It was join second highest along with Sir Len Hutton in the last 100 years. Only England former opener Marcus Trescothick has more scoring a fifty in each of his first 22 Test series he played.
Lyon brought back McGill
Stuart McGill was supposed to be Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach before Sunil Joshi was confirmed in this position. However Lyon brought back McGill in Bangladesh with a feat that was only achieved thrice in the past. Lyon finished with seven for 94 and in doing so he became the fourth bowler to take seven wickets against Bangladesh in an innings after Rangana Herath, Stuart McGill and Danish Kaneria.
