Munshiganj: The plying of 13 ferries among 21 remained suspended on Shimulia-Kanthalbari route in the Padma River under Lauhajong upazila yesterday for strong current and lack of navigability, reports UNB.
More than 500 vehicles remained stuck at Shimulia ferry ghat, creating long tailbacks and causing sufferings to hundreds of passengers.
Shah Khaled Newaz, a sub-inspector at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said the ferries are unable to take adequate vehicles to ferry due to navigability problem on the route.
Besides, two other ferries with passengers and vehicles ran aground on shoals of the river at the turning point of Lauhajong.
Md Jamshed Ali, a sub-inspector of Mawa river police outpost, said the disruption in the ferry service caused the long tailbacks of buses, trucks and cars.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suggested using an alternative route for ferrying buses and trucks.
The BIWTA authorities hope that the navigability problem will be solved within the next 5-7days as dredging work is underway inn the river.
