Clashes leave one dead, 93 injured in 3 districts

A man was killed and at least 93 people were injured in clashes in Kishoreganj, Jhenidah and Chuadanga districts  on Saturday, Sunday and yesterday.

In Kishoreganj,  a young man was killed and 35 other villagers were injured in a clash between two groups at Kolarpara Miyar Hati village in Gagra union of Mithamoin upazila yesterday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Anis, 20, son of Arafat Miah, a resident of the village.

Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mithamoin Police Station, said that there had been a long standing dispute between UP chairman Bacchu Mian, also general secretary of union unit of AL and former UP chairman Bulbul Chowdhury.

They locked into an altercation over filling soil in a pond of the village in the morning.

Our Jhenidah correspondent adds: At least 35 leaders and activists of local Awami League were injured in a factional clash over establishing dominance at Samshpur village in sadar upazila on Sunday morning.

Police sources said two groups of local Awami League—one led by Fursundi UP chairman Abdul Malek and another byAL leader Shahid Shikder—had been at loggerheads over controlling the area.

As a sequel to the enmity, followers of the both groups attacked each other with local weapons, leaving at least 35 supporters of both groups injured.

Our Chuadanga correspondent reports: At least 23 people were injured in clashes between the leaders and activists of the two groups of local Awami League over the Eid Jamaat (Congregation) at Hapania village in Alamdanga upazila on Saturday morning, reports UNB.

Police quoting locals said there had been a long standing dispute between local AL leaders Emdad Member and Mohibul Islam Montu.

Following this dispute the followers of Emdad member and Mohibul Islam locked into an altercation over speeches delivered at Eid Congregation.

Later a clash ensued among them and they attacked each other with sharp weapons and bombs. They also exchange bullets, leaving at least 23 people injured.

The injured were admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, Alamdanga Upazila Health Complex and Kushtia General Hospital. Among them, one who was critically injured was referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

Abdul Momen, Additional Superintendent of Chuadanga District police, said police fired four rounds of bullets in the air to bring the situation under control.

Six were held in this connection and additional police personnel were deployed to the area to fend off further clashes, Abdul Momen added.
