Ctg Test tit-bit

Sports Reporter, Chittagong

Nasir Hossain’s 1000
Finally Nasir got to his 1000 runs. He became the 14th Bangladeshi batsmen to reach the four digit figure. Nasir who made his comeback into the Test cricket after 2015 with the Dhaka Test, needed just six runs to reach the milestone.  As Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman were batting with so assurance that at some point it appeared that Nasir wouldn’t need not bat on the first day. But Sabbir’s unfortunate dismissal paved the way and Nasir didn’t make any mistake this time.

Five left-handed batsmen
Bangladesh became the third country, playing five left handed batsmen at the top of the order. After Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar opening the innings, Imrul Kayes came as one-down batsman. Mominul Haque, also a left hand batsman, who came to the final XI after two Test matches, played in No. 4 position. When Shakib Al Hasan bated at No. 5 position, Bangladesh got five top batsmen left-handed and it wasn’t quite a normal scene in international cricket. Earlier Sri Lanka fielded top five left handed batsmen against Bangladesh in 2002 at their own backyard in Sinhalese Sports Ground. The second incident was in 2010 and that too in Sri Lanka’s den in Pallekele but the opponent was West Indies who got their top five batsmen left handed.

All top four trapped in leg-before
When Bangladesh slumped to 85 for four, the scoreboard looked not so ordinary. Anyone who went through the board at that time, saw one bowler had all four batsman dismissed leg-before wicket and the bowler was Nathan Lyon. Such sort of incident took place for the first time in cricket history. Earlier, the Test cricket saw batsmen being dismissed leg-before wicket six times but in that case bowler wasn’t the same. Lyon dismissed Tamin Iqbal (9), Imrul Kayes (4) and Soymya Sarkar (33) in the opening session of the second Test to have Bangladesh reeling at 70 for three then added the wicket of Mominul Haque (31) in the second session as Bangladesh slumped to 85 for four. The first time when the top four batsmen were trapped lbw was in 1999 in Bridgetown when Glenn McGrath took three batsmen for lbw while his new ball partner Jason Gilespie had the other. West Indies were the second team who did it against Zimbabwe in 2001. England did it against Australia in 2003 in Sydney, Sri Lanka against New Zealand in 2005 in Napier, Sri Lanka again against Australia in Kandy in 2004 and Australia made it against West Indies in 2012 in Port of Spain. Five batsmen were lbw that time but five different bowlers got the wickets.

Nathan Lyon’s 11th five-for
Apart from a unique feat of trapping top four batsmen leg-before wicket, Lyon completed his second straight five-for in the tour when he ended the day with five for 77. It was his 11th five-for overall but what would please him that he did his job perfectly what the team wanted from him.
