Emergency response in flood-hit areas

Considering the magnitude of the calamity there is no scope to take it lightly

It is heartening to note that the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in association with its partners is scaling up the emergency response in the flood-affected northern and central parts of Bangladesh. According to a report of this newspaper on Friday, UNICEF is also providing urgent support in Cox's Bazar district with the recent influx of Rohingya children and their families. UNICEF is supporting the government in responding to 1.5 million flood-hit people by providing water purification tablets, hygiene kits, jerry cans and bleaching powder. It is working on the reactivation of the education system which will start when the water level recedesUNICEF will continue and strengthen its humanitarian support in coordination with the government of Bangladesh in education, WASH, nutrition, health and child protection sectors for the children as they are suffering the most.

It is quite disturbing to dind that the flood-affected people of the northeastern districts are suffering due to inadequate relief materials.  Incessant rain and onrush of water from neighbouring countries have caused the floods. The shortage of fresh drinking water has become acute, raising the chances of diarrhoea outbreaks. Sanitation has become yet another problem in these areas.  In fact, floods have exposed thousands of people to immense sufferings. The prolonged nature of the deluge is the main reason behind the sufferings. Many of the victims are confined to their homes. Those who could not stay at home, went to flood shelters.      Life in flood shelters is nightmarish to some people. Considering the magnitude of the calamity there is no scope to take it lightly.  It is encouraging to note that the district and other local administration along with political parties have been very active in reaching succour to the affected people. Still then many who took shelter in flood shelters are bearing the brunt of the situation.

Advance preparation can mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims. What is needed now is adequate relief materials, cash money, medical teams with medicines, water purifying tablets for the flood victims.  Providing succor for the flood-stricken people is not the only solution. Scores of people are sitting idle without any job. The relevant authorities should think how these people can be involved in income generating works. After the recession of floodwater post-flood rehabilitation measures will have to be taken by the relevant department. Permanent solution of the flood menace should also be found out. Dredging of the silted rivers can help solve flood problem greatly.
