Six ethnic men were detained by army personnel from different villages of Manikchhari and Ramgarh upazila on Monday night.
Sources said they have been arrested for allegedly instigating a conflict between Bangali and ethnic communities over disputed land.
District United Peoples Democratic front (UPDF) Press Secretary Niron Chakma said army of Sindukchhari zone in separate raids on Monday night detained Hapchhari UP member Bisu Chakma, Mamong Marma, Aungthui Marma and Momong Marma of Tilapara village, Karbary (Village Chief) of Kalapani Criaung Marma, Karbary of Bakripara Jugesh Chakma. He also alleged that the law enforcers tried to evict them from their ancestral lands.
Meanwhile, hundreds aggrieved Bangalis blocked Khagrachhari-Chittagong road at Hatimura Bazaar in Manikchhari upazila protesting ransacking of three houses, owned by their fellowmen, on Monday night.
OC of Guimara police Mustafizur Rahman said angry Bengali people blocked the Khagrachhari-Chittagong road at around 7.00 am yesterday and withdrew it at around 10.00am following repeated request from DC Muhammad Wahiduzzaman, Police Super Mazid Ali and Hill District Council Chairman Konjari Chowdhury.
The ethnic people claimed the disputed lands because of their ancestral and traditional land rights while Bengali people say they have documents given the government during settlement.
