Bangladesh-Australia 2nd Test

Target whitewash

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh now can focus on their original goal to inflict a 2-0 whitewash on Australia, a thing that gained the momentum ahead of the series. Just after their 20-run win over Australia in the first Test, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said it is the high time to fulfill the hope as the visitors are in huge pressure now to perform. If Bangladesh also win the second Test, starting in Chittagong on Monday, Australia's Test ranking could slide to as low as sixth. So there is definitely a pressure, what even the Australian skipper Steven Smith had no reservation to admit.

Bangladesh however would be relaxed on the other hand that made the whole team complacent. Sensing this probably, Mushfiqur warned his side not to be so engrossed with the victory as the task is still unfinished. Now the 2-0 whitewash dream is the thing that could inspire Bangladesh to come with all guns blazing once again.

“It is hard to get the Australian team under pressure so we must take the opportunity to win the series,” the statement of Mushfiqur Rahim summed up the mood of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's win on the fourth day came in the first Test the two teams have contested since 2006. A planned tour of Bangladesh by Australia in 2015 was canceled due to security concerns after an Italian charity worker was shot dead in Dhaka, and the Islamic State group claimed responsibility. Bangladesh have won Tests against England, Sri Lanka and Australia in the past year. In the previous 16 years of their test history, the Bangladeshis had defeated only Zimbabwe and a second-string West Indies team affected by a player strike.

So tactically a 2-0 victory over Australia would be their first against a top flight opposition that looked very realistic now. The loss again highlighted Australia's historic batting issues on pitches in subcontinental Asia — a 2-1 series loss in India this year came after a 3-0 defeat in Sri Lanka in 2016.

Much to the disappointment of Australia, in Chittagong also, they would get a rage turner. With the Bangladesh’s spin-trio—Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan Miraj and Taijul Islam in the form of their life, Australia could get another torrid time in the crease in Chittagong also. And the thing of sliding into Test

ranking would definitely add a pressure. “We’re down 1-0 in a two match series so plenty of pressure to perform and hopefully level the series in Chittagong. it’s another good challenge for this group. Obviously disappointing not to get the result we would have liked here but we’re obviously going to be looking forward to Chittagong and hopefully we’ll be able to right a few of the wrongs that we made out here,” Australia captain Steven Smith said.

“I thought we made some really good strides in our last tour to India, albeit we lost that series. We made some good strides there but as we spoke about before, we made a few of those mistakes in the first innings that were disappointing. We’ve still got a long way to go to rise up in the rankings and hopefully as a group we can continue to improve and get better.”
