River erosion takes serious turn

With a rise in the water level, erosion by the Madhumati and Nabaganga rivers has taken a serious turn at different places under Lohagora and Kalia upazilas of the district recently, reports BSS.

Local sources said at least 1,500 families of the two upazilas have been rendered homeless in the last couple of years due to erosion by the rivers.  The rivers have devoured many academic and religious institutions, including arable land.

Besides, the people living along the banks of the two rivers are in great panic and anxiety as the rivers might devour their homesteads and agriculture land at anytime.

The sources said the plight of the affected people particularly those took shelter on the flood control embankments and other safer places has been aggravated with the passage of time. The mos2tly erosion affected areas are Tetulia, Char-Boghguri, Kamthana, Itna, Pankkharchar, Degreerchar, Ghaga, Chagolchira, Kotakhol and Mahajon.

Executive engineer of Narail BWDB, Shah Newaz Talukder said he visited the river erosion-hit areas at different points of the two upazilas recently. The matter was informed to the high authorities concerned for taking an appropriate measure to this effect, he added.
