A resurgent monsoon is likely to make the day of Eid-ul-Azha (Saturday) wet and dank. Rain, which is expected across the country, may mar the holidays and continue the next day, the Met Office said. The weather may improve later on, but the active monsoon may return with more showers later.
There was a spell of rain, driven by winds, yesterday (Thursday) morning, varying in intensity in different parts of the city. North Dhaka had lesser rain compared to the south.
It affected the cattle market briefly in the morning, forcing many sellers to hand over the ropes of sacrificial animals to customers after prices fell slightly, reports said.
However, the market rose later in the afternoon, as the city started becoming empty with most people leaving after the last working day.
Traders expect prices to remain steady despite the gloomy skies. But more rain on Friday, the last day of trading before Eid, could force traders to go back sad, with the cattle not fetching the price they had hoped for.
The Met Office said rain is expected across the country, with sudden scattered showers from the morning with moderately heavy showers at places on Friday.
The Met Office has forecast normal rain in the country during September. But in the first half of the month, the country’s eastern part may see more than average showers.
One or two seasonal low pressures may brew in the Bay of Bengal and meteorologists think could spur the monsoon further, if they intensify into depressions. Until August 29, the country had 3.5 per cent more than normal average rainfall, which followed a pattern set by the monsoon since it arrived early in June. The June rainfall was 3.7 per cent higher than average, followed by 7.3 per cent above normal rainfall in July, that saw one of the worst flooding in the country’s north-east and the north-western regions that also rolled on until August.
