Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam touched the milestone of the 50th Test wickets on the fourth day of the Dhaka Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur on Wednesday.
Prior to the outset of the Dhaka Test against the high-ranked Australian side, Taijul was shy of just two wickets from his Test landmark.
The young spinner broke into the Test milestone when he got rid of middle-order batsman Peter Handscomb with a stunner when to drawer Soumya Sarkar instinctively puts his left-hand out to stop that, the ball hits his palm and bobbles up but he still has the presence of mind and composure to look back, dive fully and complete the catch just as it was dying on him.
Later, Taijul claimed another two wickets of spin all-rounder Ashton Agar and pace all-rounder Josh Hazlewood, who was the last batsman to fall before the outstanding victory of Bangladesh.
He added the second wicket in his tally when he himself sent back Ashton Agar cheaply that stunningly bounce back Bangladesh in the fray following Shakib Al Hasan’s jaw-dropping five-for.
Then he trapped lbw Josh Hazlewood that finally gave the victory of the Tigers ahead of the Eid-Ul-Azha holiday.
He reached the landmark as the fifth Bangladesh bowler but third spinner in the country’s Test history after Shakib Al Hasan (186), Mohammad Rafique (100), Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (78) and Shahadat Hossain Rajib (72).
At post match, ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan also gave the credit to Taijul Islam along with Mehedi Hasan Miraj, stating that the victory against Australia has been possible for the contribution of all the team members.
The 25-year-old spinner played only 14 Test matches for Bangladesh to cross the 50th Test-wicket milestone. Now the spinner has so far 51 Test wickets in his kitty with the best figures of 8-39, the 31st best bowling performance in Test arc, that he showcased against Zimbabwe in Dhaka, 2014.
In Bangladesh perspective, his bowling figure is still the best bowling figure in Test. The record earlier was done by Enamul Haque Jr, who grabbed 7-95 against Zimbabwe in 2005 but Shakib broke it in 2008 against New Zealand when he claimed 7-36.
Natore-born Taijul took three times five-for or five more wickets after being fast-tracked into international Test arena in 2014. In 2014, he took his first five-for against West Indies at Kingstown and then scalped six wickets against Pakistan in Khulna in 2015.
Meanwhile, both Bangladesh and Australia teams will leave Dhaka for Chittagong today to play the second Test match to be played at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city.
