Post-Eid waste management

The health of millions of people depends on the timely removal of leftovers from the sacrifice

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon at a coordination meeting of the DSCC and the DNCC held at Dhaka South Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday said that wastes of sacrificial animals would be removed in the capital within 24 hours from 2pm on the Eid day. The mayoral assurance is heartening for the inhabitants of the city. According to a report of this newspaper on Wednesday,  Eid holidays of the officials and employees of Waste Management department of both the city corporations have already been cancelled to ensure quick removal of waste after slaughtering of animals.

Maintaining cleanliness during Eid-ul-Azha is a yearly challenge. Around 4.75 lakh cattle are expected to be sacrificed on the day of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims which is scheduled to be celebrated in the country tomorrow (Saturday). Around 25,000 metric tons of additional wastes will be created from the sacrificial animals in the capital. This year DNCC mayor Annisul Huq has been undergoing treatment abroad. It seems his absence will not hamper the cleaning activities as his representatives will look after the issue.

Dhaka city presented a comparatively clean look the day after the Eid last year as many conscious residents extended their cooperation with the city corporations in washing blood and clearing leftovers promptly from where sacrificial animals were slaughtered on the Eid-ul-Azha. The city corporations made arrangements for spraying anti-septic mixed water and distributed bleaching powder among the residents for freeing the city from the stench of blood and leftovers of the sacrificed animals. We hope, once the process of prompt cleaning has started it will be strengthened gradually. This year the city corporations and the residents will perform the task in a far better way.

To prevent the spread of putrid smell, the authorities must ensure that the animal wastes are removed quickly. The people engaged in cleanliness works should ensure that the city does not reek with the stench of animal waste. The health of millions of people depends on the timely removal of leftovers from the sacrifice. Coordination among various government departments, proper enforcement of laws, strict monitoring and vigilance of the members of the law enforcement agencies can ensure a hassle-free post-Eid animal wastes management.  The responsibility of keeping this city clean and livable does not fall on the shoulders of the government alone. The conscious citizens have their due role to play in this regard.
