Eminent singer Abdul Jabbar, who played a notable role as a Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra Artiste during the Liberation War and inspiring freedom fighters with his songs, passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMM U) on Wednesday morning at the age of 80.

The veteran singer who had  settled in the Bangladesh’s music scene for five-decade, had suffered failures of both kidneys and also had heart and prostrate issues, was admitted to BSMMU’s Intensive Care Unit in May and was later transferred to a cabin.

His fellow singers like Alam Khan, Khurshid Alam, Andru Kishore, Kanak Chapa, Monir Khan, Moinul Islam Khan, relatives, and colleagues expressed sadness for the death the veteran singer.

President Abul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate condolence messages on Wednesday expressed deep shock at the death of eminent singer Abdul Jabbar.

In a condolence message, the President said, “With the death of Jabbar, the country has lost a legendary singer who inspired freedom fighters through his songs from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the 1971 Liberation War.”

In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled Abdul Jabbar’s contributions to the great Liberation War, saying that he inspired the freedom fighters through his songs from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

Also, Speaker Shirin Sharmin, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Cultural Affairs Asaduzzaman Noor mourned in the death of the veteran singer.

Mean while, Law minister Anisul Huq expressed deep shock at the death of legendary singer and freedom fighter Abdul Jabbar.

In a condolence message, the law minister recalled Abdul Jabbar’s contributions to the great Liberation War. The country has lost an eminent singer and valiant freedom fighter following his death, the law minister said.

The minister also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Early life and career

Abdul Jabbar was born in Kushtia. He passed SSC in 1956. He first took music lesson from Ustad Osman Gani and Ustad Lutful Haque. He became an enlisted singer on the radio in 1958 and on TV in 1964.

He sang patriotic songs during the independence war of 1971 and also for playback. Some of his playback songs are Ore Neel Daria, Du Jahaner Malik Tumi, Mukh Dekhe Bhul Korona, and others. His patriotic songs were broadcast through Kalurghat radio station (known as Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra) in 1971, a radio station which inspired Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini (freedom-fighters) to fight hard against Pakistan Army.

Abdul Jabbar is married to Halima Jabbar.
