Bangladesh to be free of hunger, poverty: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Mentioning that there is no scarcity of food in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said Bangladesh will be free from hunger and poverty in the near future as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reports UNB.

“There’s no shortage of food in the country. One day, Bangladesh will turn into ‘Sonar Bangla’ which will be free from poverty and hunger as dreamt by the Father of the Nation. It’s the promise of Awami League and its government,” she said.

The Prime Minister was addressing a memorial meeting organised by Awami League’s Dhaka South and North chapters at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) marking Bangabandhu’s 42nd martyrdom anniversary.

She said the government wants to take the country to a dignified position in the world following the policy and ideology of the Father of the Nation.

Talking about the recent flood that devastated many parts of the country, Hasina said the government has taken all measures to lessen the sufferings of the affected people.

“We’ve taken steps so that no one suffers from hunger. We’re importing food grains from abroad to distribute those at the doorsteps of everyone,” she said.

She also said the government will rebuild the homes of those who have lost their belongings due to the flood.

The Prime Minister also said the government has taken preventive measures so that no disease could break out after floodwater recedes. “There’ll be no scarcity of medicines,” she assured.

Terming August 15 the most stigmatised day in the life of Bangali people, she said: “One can’t bear the pains of losing only one of his/her loved ones. But, I and my sister came to know that we have none. We lost our both parents, brothers and other family members which was the most painful time for us,” she said.

Hasina said during his three and a half years’ tenure, Bangabandhu laid the foundation of Bangladesh’s development. “The killers of Bangabandhu had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the nation’s future permanently.”

The Prime Minister urged the Awami League leaders and workers to strengthen the party following the ideals of the Father of the Nation to build Bangladesh as a hunger-and-poverty-free country, saying materialisation of his ideology is the best way to pay homage to him.

Presided over by Dhaka South Awami League president Abul Hasnat, the discussion programme was addressed, among others, by AL Presidium members Dr Abdur Razzaque and Faruk Khan, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhuury Maya and Food Minister Qamrul Islam.
