Huawei Technology, a Chinese telecom giant, has shown keen interest to focus on the huge ‘unconnected’ young population in developing countries including Bangladesh.

Speaking at a press conference at the ‘Asia Pacific Emerging Market Summit 2017’ that began in Bangkok on Tuesday, Zhou Jianjun, vice president of carrier network business group of Huawei technology, said, “If we facilitate the young generation they can use more internet facilities. Because they have the time to spend (on the internet).” The summit is being jointly organised by National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission of Thailand and Huawei.

Referring to its business sin Bangladesh, Zhou said, “Bangladesh is a country of 160 million people that encourage us to invest more. ”

“We see the future is emerging market as there is huge young population that should be the targeted as future customers. For example, in the EM, 70 per cent youth use internet because only they have more fee time to use the internet” said the Huawei vice president. He also said that governments in these countries need to come up with long-term policy support in this regard.

“In the emerging market (EM) there are 5 billion people and out of that, 2 billion people are unconnected who don’t have any connectivity, and about 3 billion people don’t have any internet access” said the telecom industry official.

Telecom analyst Hiaofeng wang said, “The power has shifted from telcos to consumers . Now consumers have more freedom to choose the operator. Not only that, in China even beggars use telecom facilities to collect money, in Hong Kong the taxi drivers use up to 7 mobile sets to get customers”

Speakers at the seminar also said banks are not important but important is banking. Recent reports said that around 27 per cent of revenue comes from the mobile banking sector.
