Canadian aid for flood victims
Canada is providing CAD 200,000 through the Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund which will assist the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in providing immediate assistance to people in response to severe flooding caused by monsoon rains.
This support will focus on the delivery of an essential package of interventions and disaster risk reduction for vulnerable flood-affected households, said the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka yesterday.
On August 24, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched an emergency relief operation to support the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in providing immediate assistance to around 100,000 people for 12 months.
6 get life for murder in Sylhet
A court in Sylhet on Tuesday convicted six people and awarded them to life imprisonment for killing a day labour in 2012.
The convicts are -- Shamsul Islam and Monirul Islam, sons of late Majmil Ali, Taj Uddin and Bashir Uddin, sons of late Jomir Miah, Moynul Islam and Sebul Mia, sons of late Ishak Ali, residents of Kadipur village in Bishwanath upazila.
The court also fined them Tk 20000 each.
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed day labour Oliur Rahman Jalil, 21, son of Shunur Ali of Kadirpur village, over previous enmity on May 24, 2012.
After examining the witnesses, Judge of Sylhet Additional District and Session Court-1 AM Julfikar Hayat handed down the verdict.
Wasfia conquers Pico de Orizaba
Wasfia Nazreen, the country's only seven summiteers mountaineer, has reached the summit of Pico de Orizaba, the highest peak in Mexico and the highest volcano in North America.
Wasfia, a brand ambassador of mobile phone network Grameenphone, reached the summit along with her friend Juan Mendoza through its northern route on August 24.
Pico de Orizaba is the third highest peak in North America after Denali (also climbed by Wasfia as the first Bangladeshi) and Mount Logan. The volcano is also known as Citlaltépetl in Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, which means "Star Mountain.
US embassy holidays
The US Embassy in Dhaka, including its consular section, will remain closed on Thursday through Sunday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, a Bangladeshi national holiday, and US Labour Day, an American holiday.
American Centre with the Archer K Blood American Centre Library and the Education USA Student Advising Centre will also remain closed on August 31 to September 3. However, emergency services for US citizens will be available, said a press release on Wednesday.
Shamsul Hoque’s death anniversary tomorrow
The 9th death anniversary of Engineer of PWD Alhaj Shamsul Hoque Mojumder will be observed tomorrow, says a press release.
On this occasion Doa and Milad Mahfil will be held after Jumma prayer at Amjad Mojumder Bari Jame Mosjid, Addadar Bari Jame Mosjid, Al-Haj Shamsul Haque Mojumder Jame Mosjid and Ferdous Nagar Jame Mosjid at Amjadhat Union under Fulgazi Upzilla in Feni. All friends, relatives and well-wishers have been requested to attend the programmes.
