Sale of sacrificial animals in the city and upazilas has not gained momentum two days ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha amid record supply in the cattle markets following surplus production in Rangpur division
During visit different hats in the city and upazilas this correspondent found that traders are charging higher prices for local and imported sacrificial animals although a huge quantity of local, imported and smuggled cattle arrived in the haats. Traders claimed that around thirty to forty lakh cattle brouht to Different hats in the division. But buyers are very few. On the other hand buyers have alleged that the cattle traders and brokers are charging high prices than previous years.
BSS adds: Divisional Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Dr Mahbubur Rahman said 1.10 lakh cattle farms have produced 5.30 lakh sacrificial animals against the demand of 4.28 lakh in all eight districts under Rangpur division this season.
The cattle farms have produced about 3.51 lakh cows, 3,900 buffalos, 1.28 lakh goats and 47,500 sheep as sacrificial animals this time in the division in addition to those reared by the small and marginal farmers at homes.
“We have 1.02 lakh surplus sacrificial animals in Rangpur division and there is no need of importing animals to meet local demand for ensuring fair price of the locally reared cattle-heads,” Dr Rahman added. District Livestock Officer for Rangpur Dr Mahbub Alam said the cattle farms have produced over two lakh sacrificial animals, including 1.50 lakh cows, against the demand of 1.40 lakh in Rangpur district this season.
According to officials and cattle traders, the administrations concerned have taken adequate security measures for smooth marketing in the cattle markets and carrying of cattle-heads on the roads and highways.
“Currency screening machines have been installed at major cattle markets to prevent use of fake notes and numbers of law enforcement agencies are patrolling to ensure security,” said lessee Dudu Mian of Lalbag cattle market in Rangpur city.
Meanwhile, Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) has selected 99 spots in all 33 wards of the city for slaughtering sacrificial animals by the citizens on the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha day.
Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu disclosed the information at a press briefing here yesterday. Chief executive officer of RpCC Akhter Hossain, its Secretary Abu Musa Mohammad Musa Jongi, councilors of all 33 general and nine reserved wards and local journalists attended the briefing.
The mayor said, “A total of 106 imams and 106 butchers will remain standby at these 99 fixed places for slaughtering sacrificial animals.”
The mayor said ward-level committees have been formed for motivating the city dwellers for slaughtering sacrificial animals at the designated spots and a proper waste management. He said 1,024 cleaners would remove animal wastes using 120 trolleys and rickshaw vans. Besides, 18 tractors of the city corporation will complete disposal of sacrificial animal wastes in 24 hours, he added.
