Foreign diplomats briefed about Rohingya census

Foreign diplomats were briefed yesterday about the planned census of undocumented Myanmar nationals, popularly known as Rohingyas, living in different parts of the country. At the briefing attended by diplomats from developed countries, Indonesia and Malaysia at the state guest house Padma, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics made a presentation on listing of undocumented Rohingyas, said a foreign ministry official.
“BBS is going to conduct a limited census on undocumented Myanmar nationals to help formulate a proper strategy,” he said. The census would be conducted in six districts -- Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Patuakhali and Chittagong.
The diplomats wanted to know about issues including census questionnaire, time, methodology and objective, said another official. “We told them that we need to know the exact number of undocumented Myanmar nationals. This will enable us to undertake our next course of action,” he said. It will also benefit the development partners in preparing their welfare plan for the Rohingyas, the official said.
