‘Game of Thrones’ breaks audience record with season finale

HBO is winning with Game of Thrones. The Season 7 finale of the cable channel’s fantasy adventure series Sunday night attracted 12.1 million viewers, a series high, HBO said in a statement Monday. The first replay and preliminary viewing from HBO Go and HBO Now raised total viewing to 16.5 million viewers for the night.

According to HBO, Sunday night’s record audience is 13% more than the previous high set two weeks earlier (10.7 million viewers). Sunday’s audience also represents a 36% increase over last year’s finale (8.9 million viewers), and was up 19% from this year’s premiere episode (10.1 million viewers).HBO says that episodes of Season 7 have been averaging just under 31 million viewers, an increase of nearly 8 million viewers from the same point in time last season.
