Rain likely to increase from Friday

Different parts of the country may get light to moderately heavy scattered rainfall from Thursday, which may mar Eid-ul-Azha celebrations on Saturday, Met Office sources said yesterday. Moreover, several rivers continue to flow above the danger level at 15 points. The Kushiyara flowed 82 cm above its danger level at Amalshid in Sylhet yesterday despite a 2-cm fall in the morning.
Its rain-fed twin, the Surma, which also carries the flow of the Barak from the Indian state of Manipur, went in spate following heavy rain upstream. The water level may fall in the next 24 hours despite flowing 40 cm above the danger level, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre sources said. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganga-Padma may also continue to fall in the next 48 hours, they added. As the rivers retreat, they present the new menace of erosion. The swirling waters gnaw away at their banks, gobbling up everything, from trees to homesteads and crop lands, said reports from the flood-ravaged areas.
