Warner changes whole momentum: Cummins

Sports Reporter

Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins believed David Warner gave them the much-needed confidence to wrap up the first Test as he was like ‘The Bull’ out there-- focused on the job and taking the game on.

“He’s such a big player for us and you could just see it in his eye when he was out there. He was so focused,” Cummins said.

“We always say ‘be the bull’ and he looked like he was The Bull out there; just focused and taking the game on. He got his 50 rapidly and I think it just changes the whole momentum but also the  mindset for the other batsmen who are to come in, just taking the game on. It is great.”

Australia are now comfortably placed at 109-2, needs only 156 runs to win the first game. The pitch however wasn’t as trickier as it was in the first two days, that came as a great help for Australia.

Much to the credit of the Australian bowlers, they were able to shoot Bangladesh out for 221 in the second innings as the hosts went towards a big total thanks to 78 runs from Tamim Iqbal.

Cummins got Tamim just after the lunch to turn the things. The dismissal however was unfortunate for Tamim as he had nicked faintly behind the wicket-keeper. Umpire wasn’t convinced that it was out but Australia persisted with their belief and asked for review which was successful.

“I thought I heard something but I normally hear things when I bowl. It was actually Mathew Wade, he definitely heard something. Glenn Maxwell at point (also heard it). They’re pretty good behind the stumps, Wade doesn’t get too many wrong. He’s got a theory when point also hears something its normally a spot. It was a pretty good view, it was only a faint nick,” Cummins informed.

Mushfiqur Rahim then kept Bangladesh on course before his unfortunate run-out. Australia then took an iron grip on the match and maintained it till the close of the day three.

“I think it is a great position. I think the pitch seems to have mellowed out a little bit compared to day one. I mean, I think keeping our target to 260 really kept us in the game and to finish off tonight like we did, if we have a good first hour tomorrow it should really set the game up. So I think we’re in a great position.”

“As I said, that last hour or so should give us a lot of confidence, I am certainly really confident. Smithy (Steven Smith) and Dave (David Warner) look like they had really good game plans out there and they were in control. SO that is really promising and it is only 150 runs or so away so a good couple of hours in the morning and hopefully we get pretty close.”

Should Australia win the match, it would Cummins first victory with the team. In an injury-ridden career, Cummins played just five matches for Australia, since his debut in 2011.
