Man shot dead in capital
A man was shot to death in Iqbal road area in the capital’s Shewrapara on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman Anis, 45, a contractor, and a resident of Paschim Shewrapara.
Sub-Inspector Bachchu Miah, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said that two miscreants opened fire on Anisur in front of a tea stall of the area around 10:00 pm, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was rushed to DMCH where he succumbed to his injuries around 1:30 am on Tuesday.
He received bullets on his head, ear, backside and hand, added the sources.

Two arrested for extortion
Detectives on Monday arrested two persons on charge of extorting money by sending objectionable pictures through email from the capital’s Ramna Thana area.
“We arrested Md Hasibul Hasan alias Setu, 29, and Subrata Kumar Paul alias Sujan, 29, for demanding Taka 3 lakh as extortion from a woman after threatening to post some of her objectionable pictures on the internet,” a DB official said. Setu earlier got married with a private university female student while they were studying together and Setu later got divorced, he said.
A case was lodged with Ramna Model Police Station to this end on August 28.
Police has been trying to capture another accused in the case Tanvir Khan Juwel.

MA Zaher’s qulkhwani today
The qulkhwani of leading geologist and former director general of Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) MA Zaher will be held today after Asr prayers at Gulbagh Jame Mosque near his residence.
He died on Sunday night due to old age complications at the age of 85 at his residence leaving behind his wife, three sons, three daughters and a host of admirers to mourn his death. The geologist earned repute for him and the country particularly through his discovery of a mineral which the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) named after him as “Zaherite” in 1977.

UGC chief leaves for India
University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan left Dhaka for India on Tuesday.
He will attend a meeting on Assessment and Promotion Committee for Non-Teaching Employees (NTEs) to be held in South Asian University (SAARC University) of New Delhi from 29-31 August, said a press release.
He is expected to return home September 4.
