The cabinet yesterday (Monday) approved the draft Anti Corruption Commission (Amendment) Act 2015. It will allow the police to press forgery and cheating charges, thereby reducing pressure on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The approval was given at a cabinet meeting held at the secretariat, with the Prime Minister in the chair. At present, only the ACC is empowered to press charges in cases filed under eight sections, including sections 420, 462A, 462B, 466, 467, 468, 469 and 471 of the Criminal Penal Code -1860.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, cabinet secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said people are suffering, as the police were not receiving forgery and cheating charges because of the inclusion of the sections in the ACC’s schedule, following an amendment of the ACC Act in 2013.
“After the latest amendment, all cheating and forgery cases of the non-government sector will be tried in judicial judges' courts. The cases are now being tried in special judges' courts. The anti-graft body will deal with cheating and forgery cases related to government property, duties of government employees and bankers,” the cabinet secretary said.
According to him, the ACC will hand over all under-
investigation and under-trial cases on cheating and
forgery to competent authorities like judicial magistrates 'courts to continue the trial process. “Similar cases which are under the ACC’s primary inquiry, will be disposed of automatically,” he said.
ACC chairman M Badiuzzaman told The Independent that at least 5,000 forgery and cheating cases are pending with the anti-graft body. The cabinet also approved the draft of the National Nutrition Policy, 2015 to improve the nutrition condition of the common people, especially mothers, children, teenage girls and the underprivileged section of society.
The cabinet also approved the draft of the Air Service Agreement titled Agreement between Canada and Bangladesh on Air Transport to be signed between Bangladesh and Canada to run three passenger and three cargo flights by their designated airlines each week.
The meeting was also apprised of the foreign minister’s visit to France from June 21 to June 24, 2015.
