Training on zinc rice held

A training programme for farmers on zinc enriched rice - BRRI Dhan-62 - was held at the agriculture training centre in Santhia upazila of Pabna district on Sunday.
The farmers were given training on techniques for achieving bumper yield of the crop. The trainers urged the farmers to share their experience with other farmers for boosting the production of the rice. The training programme was chaired by Santhia upazila agriculture officer Ranjan Kumar Sarker while Bibhuthi Bhushan Sarker, Deputy Director of Pabna Agriculture Extension Department (AED) was the chief guest. Additional Deputy Director of the same office (crop) Sarker Safiuddin spoke as special guest.
Chased by cops, man drowns

A farmer drowned in a pond after being beaten and chased by two police constables at Bheduriya village in Bhola sadar upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Abu Jamil, 50, resident of the village. Locals said police from Bedhuria police investigation centre engaged in altercation with some farmers, who were drying Aus paddy on Bhola- Bedhuria road in defiance of warning. At one stage of heated exchanges police constables charged baton on the farmers and chased them. Abu Jamil got hurt by the police action, fell into a roadside pond and drowned. Locals rescued Jamil and sent him to Bhola Sadar Hospital where attending doctor declared him dead. Hearing the news locals barricaded Bhola- Bedhuria road for hours and beat up a police constable.
Sub-inspector Forkan, in-charge of Bedhuria police investigation centre, confirmed the incident, but denied any police action on locals. Officer-in-charge Mobassher Ali of Bhola Sadar police station said action will be taken after an investigation. Later the authorities suspended the two police constables.
