Teachers and guardians have called a daylong strike to be held at all the educational institutions in Rajshahi city and district today demanding removal of the chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Rajshahi for his alleged involvement in corruption. The agitators under the banner of Rajshahi Nagarik Somaj have called the strike from a brief rally held at C&B intersection on Sunday noon. They announced they would also begin a sit-in programme in front of REB on September- 3 and they would continue a sit-in programme there until the demands are met.
Earlier at 11am, the police intercepted some hundreds of the agitators while they were holding a pre-scheduled rally at Laxmipur intersection. Intercepted by the police, the agitators brought out a protest procession and held the brief rally at C&B intersection.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Rajpara police station, said that police did not allow them to hold that rally as there were possibilities of chaos. Meanwhile, the National Teachers-Employees Front began a movement for removal of the board chairman in May last. The Nagorik Somaj later took the movement of teachers. The front leaders alleged that Chairman Prof Abul Hayat, who took the charge on February 16, was involved in corruption and nepotism and supported BNP-Jamaat axis in the board activities. Contacted, Prof Abul Hayat said that the agitators brought false allegations against him with an ulterior motive.
