SM Sultan’s birth anniversary observed

The 91st birth anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan was observed in his home district Narail through various programmes yesterday.
District administration and Sultan Foundation jointly arranged a day-long programme that included placing of wreaths at his grave, Quran khani, milad mahfil, children’s art competition, rally, discussion meeting and prize giving ceremony.
Sultan Smrity Sangraha-shala, Shishu Swarga and Sultan Manch premises wore a festive look on this occasion of commemorating the great artist.
Discussion meeting on the life and works of the artist was arranged at SM Sultan Complex auditorium with deputy commissioner of Narail and Sultan Complex Foundation President Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair.
It was addressed, among others, by district council administrator Subas Chandra Bose, Sultan Foundation Secretary Ashikur Rahman Miku, Narail Press Club president Enamul Kabir Tuku and additional police superintendent Minhazur Rahman.
Earlier, on August 8 an art camp was inaugurated by the deputy commissioner at Shilpakala Academy premises.
SM Sultan, nick named Lal Mia, who once stirred the arena of world art with his paintings, was born at Masimdia village, suburb of Narail town on 10 August in 1924. His father Meser Ali was a poor mason. During his lifetime his paintings were exhibited at home and abroad.
The paintings were exhibited in galleries abroad along with the works of world famous Pablo Picasso, Salvedor Dali and Paul Klee.   His fame rests on his striking depictions of muscular Bangladeshi peasants engaged in the activities of their everyday lives.
