KOICA seminar on autism held in Dhaka

A four-day long knowledge sharing seminar on ‘Diagnosis and Treatment of Autism for Child in Bangladesh’ from 21st - 24th August, 2017 was held at a hotel in the capital. Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in collaboration with Shuchona Foundation, Institute of Pediatric Neurodisorder & Autism (IPNA), Korea Resources Development Institute for Health and Welfare (KOHI) organised the programme, says a press release. The seminar is designed to set up strategic plans for institutions in autism, check autism material development and to update the action plans for better policies and human resources development.   

Among others Joe Hyun-Gue, Country Director, KOICA Bangladesh Office, Prof Dr Shaheen Akhter, director, IPNA, Bae Jin-hyeon, Deputy Country Director, KOICA Bangladesh Office, Ataul Haque, general secretary, KOICA-Bangladesh Alumni Association (KBAA), Dr Sukho Shin, President of Korean Academy for Autism Spectrum Disorder were present and spoke at the inaugural ceremony.

The speakers of the inaugural session opined that KOICA has designed the mentioned programme to improve the autism for Bangladesh. KOICA has been supporting in autism from 2012 till date. The programme has been extended until 2018. KOICA also participated in the International Conference on “Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders 2017” held in Bhutan in April which shows strong support for autism development in Bangladesh.

 The speakers also said that Bangladesh has recognized autism as a serious threat to a child’s development. As a result, government and non-governmental organisations related to autism have developed various curriculums and detection techniques.

In her speech as chief guest, Prof. Dr. Shaheen Akhter said that in the field of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, Bangladesh has achieved eye –catching successes especially in awareness building. The credit of this achievement solely goes to Saima Wazed Hossain, the daughter of our honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been awarded recently as world autism champion. She also said that beside these tremendous achievements, we’ve some setbacks in the field of using proper diagnostic tools, treatment aids and to create experts nationwide due to resource constraints. And KOICA can cooperate in this sector based on their experience.

Mr. Joe Hyun-Gue said in his opening speech that KOICA is supporting Bangladeshi professionals to get expertise on ASD since 2012 and more than 100 participants have been directly benefited from the training organized by KOICA in Korea. He also said that if we work together, we’ll make a better world for the children with autism and other neuro-developmental disorders (NDDs).

The participants are comprised of doctors, therapists, teachers and administrators from IPNA, Autism Welfare Foundation, Ministry of Social Welfare, Center for Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed, Tauri Foundation, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and National Foundation for Development of the Disabled Persons.
