Girl ‘kills self’ for failing HSC
GAZIPUR: A college girl, who failed in this year’s HSC examinations, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Bhim Bazar area of the city on Sunday night. The deceased was Champa Akhter, 18, daughter of Delwar Hossain, a resident of the area. Police, quoting locals, said Champa, who had appeared at this year’s HSC examinations from local Rover Palli Degree College, went to the college in the afternoon to know her result that was published on that day. Later, she returned home upset in the afternoon as she failed in the examination and she hanged herself with her scarf from the fan in her room around 9pm. On information, police rushed to the spot.
Sub-inspector Syed Azharul Islam, in-charge of Hotapara police station, confirmed the incident.
Man commits ‘suicide’ in Ctg
CHITTAGONG: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling of his house in the city’s Sadargaht area early yesterday. The deceased was Michael Mazumder, 32. Abul Kalam, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat police station, told The Independent that Michael hanged himself from a ceiling of his room following a family dispute. Being informed police rushed to the spot and rescued Michael in critical condition. Later, he was sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where on-duty doctor declared him dead, the OC added.
Six BNP leaders held in Savar
SAVAR: Police arrested six BNP leaders, including Savar municipality mayor, from different areas in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on Sunday night on sabotage charges. The arrestees were identified as Savar municipality mayor Mohammad Refat Ullah, president Nazim Uddin, vice-president of the municipality unit BNP and three other BNP leaders. Rasel Sheikh, assistant police super of Savar Model Police Station, said they arrested Refat along with Nazim in front of Refat’s house from the municipality area around 10pm on Sunday. Later, they also arrested three other BNP activists from Tetuljhora and Bhakurta areas. Refat is accused in eight sabotage cases and he was on bail, added ASP.
