Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday said the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, the lone specialised counterterrorism wing of the police, has made a good progress in tackling militancy, reports UNB. He came up with the remarks at a views-exchange meeting with members of the CTTC of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who took part in anti-militant drives ‘Operation Tepid Punch’ in Kushtia and ‘Operation August Bite’ at Panthapath in the capital recently, at the Police Headquarters.
The IGP said the CTTC unit has achieved the success for its united efforts as well as professionalism. “The success should continue,” he said. Mentioning that they have given importance to ‘intelligence-led’ policing (ILP), he said, “We could complete anti-militant operations successfully due to the collection of intelligence information in due time.”
The ILP is a policing model built around the assessment and management of risk. Intelligence officers serve as guides to operations, rather than operations guiding intelligence.
Hailing the role of Bangladesh Police in preventing militancy in the country, Shahidul said police have so far conducted 23 successful anti-militant operations after the terror attack on Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery. “Those earned praise both at home and abroad. Bangladesh is now recognised as a ‘role model’ for preventing militancy,” he said.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, CTTC unit chief Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner Md Aminul Islam and DMP deputy commissioners concerned also spoke on the occasion.
Senior officials of the Police Headquarters, DMP and its CTTC unit were present.
Later, the IGP handed over cheques for incentives to Assaduzzaman and Monirul for CTTC’s contributions to curbing militancy.
