Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recruit more Bangladeshi seafarers in foreign vessels, reports UNB. The Prime Minister sought the cooperation when visiting IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim met her at her office. After the meeting, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters. He said the Prime Minister said Bangladesh wants to more IMO engagement in the development of coastal shipping sector across the Bay of Bengal. Drawing the attention of the IMO secretary general to ocean pollution, the Prime Minister said pollution is causing harm to Bangladesh’s sea resources. Mentioning that developing countries like Bangladesh need capacity building, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is manufacturing high quality inland vessels and ocean-going ships. Kitack Lim praised Bangladeshi seafarers saying Bangladesh, a, IMO B-category member, is doing well in IMO as the country has huge potentials in this sector. Kitack said he will visit shipbuilding yards and maritime academy and related organisations and institutes in Chittagong. PM’s Adviser Gowher Rizvi and Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury were present.
