Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the blacksmiths are extremely busy making and sharpening knives, machetes and choppers for cutting and slicing the flesh of sacrificial animals.

Shudhir, Bipro, Ronojit and Kamruzzaman of Jessore Bazar disclosed that it is only at this time of the year that demand for their products spurts, centred as it is on Eid-ul-Azha. The blacksmiths are currently very busy, making household and agricultural implements like choppers, axes, knives, crowbars, chisels, hammers, saws, spades, cleavers, yokes, shovels, blades, hooks, mallets, punches, nails, hoes, sickles and pickaxes to meet the huge public demand.

They also said, “We expect the highest sales of our products this year ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.”On visiting Karmokar Patty at Boro Bazar in Jessore town, this correspondent found Shadan, a blacksmith, hard at work. He said, “Bank loans on easy terms would help us make more iron goods to market them at the various ‘haats’ and bazaar in this area and at the fairs of the district.”

“Last year, the sales of our products were very good—around Tk. 4,000 to Tk. 5,000 per day. But this year, sales are poor till date—around Tk. 2,000 to Tk. 3,000 every day,” he said. He added, “We are selling ‘daos’ and ‘botis’ at Tk. 700 per kg, the per kg selling rate of choppers is Tk. 600 per kg, and sharp slaughtering knives are selling at Tk. 500 per piece. The small knife is selling for Tk. 100 to Tk. 150 apiece.”

This year, some 68,500 animals have been readied for sacrifice for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha in eight upazilas of Jessore district. “More people should come to our shops for ‘daos’, choppers and knives for slaughtering the animals. But fewer numbers of people are currently coming to our shop.”

Our Jhenidah correspondent adds:  Blacksmiths of Jhenidah have become very busy as the demand for iron-made household goods are on the rise ahead of Eid-ul Azha.

People who will sacrifice animals and also the butchers of the district are getting ready to buy new machetes, choppers, knives and other iron-made goods. People are also repairing their old and damaged machetes, knives and other tools needed for cutting meat. Shamol Karmakar, a blacksmith of Kaliganj main bazaar told The Independent that usually their daily income amounts to Tk 240 to Tk 300. But ahead of Eid-ul Azha, especially a week before, their earnings shoot up.

Visiting various smithies this correspondent found that blacksmiths are busy producing and repairing iron-made tools for cutting meat.

Prices totally depend on weight of iron, according to some blacksmiths.

An 80-year-old blacksmith Kamal Karmakar who runs his smithy with his son in Jhenidah main haat area said, “We are busy only before Eid-ul Azha and during the rest of the year we just pass idle days”. His son added that they make new tools as well as repair the damaged ones.
