Bangladesh’s worst start since 2004
The last time Bangladesh lost three wickets for less than 10 in the first innings of a Test was in 2004, against New Zealand at Dhaka. 13 years after they had tasted the similar fate when a deadly spell of fast bowler Pat Cummins had the hosts reeling at 10 for three in just four overs. Utilising the early moisture, Cummins moved the ball with raw pace which actually did the trick. Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman and Imrul Kayes literally were beaten by the pace to offer dolly behind the wicket.
Maxwell’s first wicket after four years
Maxwell’s last wicket was Ajinkya Rahane during Australia’s series against India in 2013. That was his seventh wicket in his career and the all-rounder had to wait four years to make it eight. This time Tamim Iqbal was his victim as he stunned the well-set opener with one that spun more sharply than the anticipation of the batsman. Maxwell might have waited four years but in those periods, he played only three matches as he wasn’t considered as the material for longer version until his century in India gave the Aussie selectors a glimpse of his talent.
Tamim, Shakib break the trend
Before Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, only three batsmen—Habibul Bashar Sumon, Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim touched the landmark of 50 Test for Bangladesh. None of the three batsmen could mark the occasion in some style actually. There was question whether they could break the trend and they did it in magnificent style. When the team needed them to fire badly after Cummins reduced Bangladesh to 10 for three, they came up with a stellar performance to rescue Bangladesh. They combined for a 155-run partnership, second highest in this stand to help Bangladesh post a good total in rage turner. In the process both of them brought up fifty plus knock as Shakib made highest 84 while Tamim scored 71.
Ashton Agar’s successful comeback
Left arm spinner Ashton Agar made his comeback count after four years with three for 46. Australia’s plan was to prepare Agar before their next tour in India in 2021 as Steven Smith aimed to win a series there. Agar was considered ahead of Swepson because age wouldn’t permit the latter to tour in India in 2021. That’s why despite Swepson’s superb performance in India, Australia brought back Agar to gain some experience about sub-continent wicket.
