Parliament to discuss observations made by CJ, says Tofail

Special Correspondent

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday said that the next session of the current parliament scheduled for September 10 will discuss the observations made by the chief justice on the 16th amendment verdict. The discussion will be held on the observations made by the chief justice on the verdict, which gave birth to massive reactions from the ruling quarter. Leaders from the ruling party and several ministers criticised Chief Justice SK Sinha’s observations and demanded his resignation. Even Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself heavily criticised the chief justice (CJ) for several observations he made on the verdict and said the CJ should have resigned after making ‘some objectionable’ remarks in his observation.

Tofail also hinted at that situation and said the chief Justice’s resignation can also be discussed in the parliament sitting.

“There are so many examples in different countries in the world, including Sri Lanka, that the parliament of the respective countries removed their chief justice,” he said at a function held at the National Press Club yesterday.

Muktijoddha Sanghati Parishad organised the programme marking the August 15 National Mourning Day.

President of the body Col (retd) Showkat Ali presided over the programme while professor of Dhaka University Mezbah Kamal, among others, addressed it.

Tofail Ahmed also said that a vested quarter was involved in a conspiracy against the government and that people should be alert against it.
