Bangladesh had embarked on its journey in Test cricket as the tenth Test playing nation in November, 2000 against the match of India, the current top-ranked Test side in ICC rankings.
After being crossed so many ups and downs of the prolonged 17-year span, they played their centenary Test against Sri Lanka this year. During these periods, they had to taste sour taste in the bulk of 76 Tests.
Bangladesh won only nine Tests among these matches in where they won two matches against the top-flight England and Sri Lanka within the last six months.
They drew in 15 Tests after being fast-tracked into Test arc.
Among 100 Tests, Bangladesh played so far four Tests against the top-notch Australia before their last bilateral series held in 2006 when they played two-match Test series.
The Tigers played their first Test at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium (KSOAS) in Fatullah, where they lost the match by three wickets. Despite Bangladesh’s healthy first innings total of 427, where Shahriar Nafees contributed a brilliant 138, they lost the match due to their second innings collapse for 148.
The home side conceded defeat to the second and last of the Test series by an innings and 80 runs as they put on just 197 in their first innings before second innings 304 after Australia’s first innings 581 for 4 declared.
The Tigers had played their first Test series against the Aussies side in 2003 in Australian soil, wherein they had lost the first Test by an innings and 132 runs in Darwin and the second Test by an innings and 98 runs in Cairns because of the batting frailty.
Australia yet again came here in Bangladesh after a 11-year-long hiatus though they had to play the series in 2015 but the tourists suspended the series due to the then security grounds.
The cricket of Bangladesh reached at a new height following their meteoric surge in one-day cricket for the last two and half-a-years. Of late, they made significant progress in Test besides one-day international.
So, they have huge expectation from all the fronts surrounding the two-match Test series. The key performers including captain Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, the trio has been playing together since a long period along with their current mentor, Chandika Hathurusingha flatly expressed their desires to make clean sweep the Test series. Let’s see what will happen.
