Greens for Saudi-like animal waste management

UNB

Green activists at a discussion here on Saturday urged the government to introduce Saudi Arabia-like modern waste management system to deal with the wastes of sacrificial animals during Eid-ul-Azha, reports UNB.

They said millions of animals are sacrificed during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, but the country's environment gets polluted during the religious festival each year in absence of proper management of sacrificial animals' wastes.

Poribesh Banchao Andolon (Poba), a green voluntary organisation, arranged the discussion at its city office.

Chaired by Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Poba general secretary Engr Abdus Sobhan, its joint secretary Lelin Chowdhury, Modern Club president Abul Hasnat and Poba sub-secretary MA Wahed.

Poba chairman Naser Khan said waste management system in Saudi Arabia has some features that include selecting designated places for slaughtering sacrificial animals, cleaning up these places, removing the skins of these animals with trained people, and cleaning up and reusing animal wastes.

“Many cities around the world, including Makkah, have selected places where trained people slaughter the sacrificial animals. So, the waste generated from the sacrificial animals could be managed properly that help maintain the environment,” he said.

Engr Abdus Sobhan said about 2.32 crore cattle are slaughtered a year in the country while half of them are slaughtered during the Eid-ul-Azha. He predicted that about 1.15 crore animals will be slaughtered during the Eid-ul-Azha this year.
