Stocks finished higher last week that ended Thursday with speculation and profit taking ahead of the Eid festival after witnessing red in the previous week, reports UNB.
The total turnover for the week stood at Tk 115.43 crore, a rise by 53.63 percent, which was Tk 75.13 crore in the week before.
The daily turnover averaged Tk 832.85 crore, registering an increase of 2.13 per cent which was similar to last week over the previous week's average of Tk 815.47 crore.
The week witnessed five trading sessions as usual. Of them, the first day's index lost 42 points, which was subsequently gained back over the two following days.
The fourth day saw a mostly flat index movement and the market closed with 29.5 points gain in the last day.
DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 24.31 points or 0.41 per cent to finish the week at 5,885.42 points.
The two other indices also edged higher. The DSE Shariah Index also gained 1.44 points or 0.11 per cent to close at 1,305.62 points. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 2.25 points or 0.11 per cent to settle at 2,111.34 points.
Among the large cap sectors, Telecommunication and Fuel & Power lost 1.24 per cent and 0.71 per cent respectively.
LankaBangla Securities, a stockbroker, said, "Investors are gearing up for the Eid festival coming up on September 2 and activity in the bourses has been driven by profit taking ahead of the festive period, particularly by retail investors."
The stockbroker also noted that average trade volume decreased by 7.8 per cent and total number of trades increased by 71.2 per cent as the last week had only three trading days.
The gainers took a lead over the losers as out of 335 issues traded, 176 closed higher, 140 closed lower and 17 remained unchanged on the DSE in the last week.
The market capitalisation of the DSE went down by 0.0015 per cent last week as it was Tk 397,048 crore on the opening day of the week and it rose to Tk 397,042 crore on closing day of the week.
Top gaining stocks were MONNOCERA, KAY&QUE, and INTECH. Conversely, top losing stocks were GQBALLPEN, NLI1STMF and BDAUTOCA.
BBSCABLES topped the weekly turnover list followed BBS, LANKABAFIN, FORTUNE, ACI, RSRMSTEEL and KEYACOSMET.
Monno Ceramic Industries Ltd was the week's best performer, posting a gain of 41.88 per cent, while Sandhani Life Insurance Ltd was the worst loser, slumping by 18.31 per cent following no dividend declaration.
The port city bourse Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed higher with its Selective Categories Index, CSCX, advancing 0.30 points or 0.78 per cent to settle at 11,035.71.
Of the total 285 issues traded, 138 advanced, 120 declined and 27 remained unchanged.
