Stocks fell for a third straight day, with banking, energy, cement and tannery shares posting the major declines yesterday, as investors continued selling shares for refreshing their portfolio, reports BSS.
The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fell 28.72 points to 4815.63 when the blue-chip DS30 and Shariah DSES closed down at 1869.31 and 1869.31 respectively.
The session yesterday began moderately upward, but the trend evaporated due to selling of large-cap shares, which eventually caused slide in some major sectors those were saw active buying in the previous trading sessions.
Among these sectors, bank was down by 1.52 per cent, cement by 1.11 per cent, tannery by 0.51 per cent and fuel and power by 0.41 per cent.
Others shares from textile, insurance, food and allied sectors also suffered losses as well as the demand side was weak when a large number of investors became watchful ahead of third quarter financial results due next month.
Some of them were also selling shares for cash to invest in the forthcoming IPOs (initial public offerings).
The daily trade value and volume, however, declined due to low demand.
The trade value fell by 2.19 per cent to Tk 673.47 crore when the volume fell by 12.96 per cent to 15.12 crore shares.
The market was absolutely for buyers as 197 issues were down across the board against only 83 moderately advancing securities. Dulamia Cotton, Progressive Life, Anlima Yarn, Deshbandhu Textile and BD Welding were the day's worst losers.
Shares from some sectors, including NBFI, engineering, pharmaceuticals and textile gained despite the slack demand when Northern Jute, Gemini Sea, Zaheen Spinning, Libra Infusion and 1stICB were the top five advancing issues.
UPGDCL topped the turnover list followed by Lafarge Surma, ACI, BSCCL, SPCL, United Air and BSRM Ltd.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also extended the loss yesterday, with its major CSCX price index losing over 52 point to close at 9007.62.
Out of the day's 263 issues traded, 170 suffered loss and 68 closed higher. The daily trade value was Tk 53.16 crore for 1.31 crore shares.
