The government is working on to fix the minimum and maximum price slabs for using internet in mobile phones, Junaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for information and communication (ICT) ministry, said yesterday.
During the press meet programme on the upcoming ‘Bangladesh Internet Week’ which will be held from September 5-11, the state minister said, the ICT ministry is working on in collaboration with the ministry of post and telecommunication and the ICT industry to fix the rate of mobile data service like the way it fixed the rate for voice services.
“Right now, at retail level, the price of per bandwidth is fixed but at consumer level, the mobile operators and other internet service providers are charging rates as per their will. Soon there will be a guideline to fix the price slab for using data services”, he said.
Talking about the various aspects of Bangladesh Internet Week, the state minister said, this initiative is taken with a goal of creating one crore new internet users in the country every year.
“ICT division of the government join hands with Grameenphone and Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) to take internet into the doorsteps of the people in fur flung places”.
Palak said the present government is determined to take internet at the grass root level to implement its dream of creating Digital Bangladesh. “Internet is an essential part of education. That’s why the government has given internet to the educational institution at  a 25 per cent discounted price. Very soon, the educational institution will be given internet at 50 per cent discounted price”.
About the current bandwidth capacity of the country, the minister said Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) received 200 GB (gigabyte) bandwidth from the submarine cable consortium out of which only 32 GB is used. Another 90 GB is supplied by the six International Terrestrial Cable operators of the country.
