A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth wing of BNP, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Alaiyapur in Begumganj upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Md Alam, joint convener of Alaiyapur union unit of Juba Dal. Jahirul Islam, additional superintendent of Noakhali police, told the news agency that police arrested Alam, who was accused in 16 cases, from Amanullahpur village in Alaipur union earlier in the day.
According to his statement, a team of police along with him conducted a drive at the village at midnight to recover firearms, he said. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Alam opened fire on them to snatch him which forced them to retaliate, Jahirul said.
During the exchange of fire, Alam was shot dead while others managed to flee the scene.
