Former President Badruddoza Chowdhury and Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain have called for a national unity for the emergence of a greater political force, reports UNB. They came up with the call in a joint statement issued yesterday. “We call upon all those who love the country, believe in the country’s Liberation War, independence and sovereignty to get united to build a progressive Bangladesh ensuring the full rights of all communities live both in plains and hills,” the statement reads.
They said a grater political force must emerge comprising students, educated and noted citizens, lawyers, physicians, teachers, freedom fighters and their family members, businesspeople, workers, farmers, ex-government and non-government officials and employees and other professionals apart from like-mined political parties with a demand for acceptable Election Commission, election system and election laws for holding the next election in a fair, credible and impartial manner with the participation of all political parties and individuals.
They also said the new political force will also be meant for building a happy and prosperous Bangladesh free from poverty, corruption and terrorism.
Explaining the background of the 1971 Liberation War, the two leaders said the liberation-aspiring people of Bangladesh earned independence and established democracy through their self-sacrifices in a nine-month bloody war.
“The constitution written with the blood of 30 lakh martyrs is the highest law of Bangladesh. The charter clearly states that all the powers of the republic belong to people, and the power will be exercised through the elected representatives,” the statement observed.
The two leaders said people start losing their power when the values and the spirit of the Liberation War are neglected and people’s rights are ignored. “Under the circumstances, it’s a time-befitting demand for building a non-violent political platform uniting people to ensure their empowerment,” the statement added.
Mentioning that people’s unity is the great power, the duo said ‘many powers’ in the world had to bow out to people’s united efforts. “The people of Bangladesh must get united to bring a meaningful change to the social system.”
