Shakib Al Hasan becomes synonymous with milestones and records as its great example he is still the No. 1 all-rounder in three formats of games. Now he stands on the brink of another milestone.
Only three bowlers have possessed the feat. If Shakib could claim five or more wickets in an innings against Australia, he will then break into the three-man’s club. And then his name will be implanted besides them.
In Test folklore, Sri Lankan spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath coupled with South African pace spearhead Dale Steyn.
Shakib enriched his wicket kitty with 176 wickets that he got from 49 Tests with the best figures of 7-36. He grabbed five or five-plus wickets in 15 occasions. Already he claimed five or five more wickets against all the Test playing nations barring Australia.
This time he has opportunity ahead of him to share the spoils with Muralitharan, Herath and Steyn. Shakib is well aware of his record what he flatly acknowledges it to media yesterday.
He said that he is not raring to make the record but he will be more happy if he could contribute more with bat and ball for the team’s success.
“I have the words of record in my mind. I have four innings in hand. Let’s see what happens. It is a big thing for me how much I can contribute for the team,” Shakib Al Hasan said.
“It is seen that other bowlers got five-wicket by better bowling that has been better for the team. Getting wicket is not in my hand,” Shakib told newsmen at the Media Block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
“It is seen that sometimes a bowler does not get any wicket after bowling well. Again many times a bowler can take wicket after bowling not so well. The pair of bowling is important how fairly they bowl well,” he added.
When asked if he has any regret to play 50 Tests in 10-year span, the country’s premier all-rounder said that he feels no regret and happy what is got during his cricket career.
“I’ve no regret in my life. Alhamdulillah, I’m happy what is happened,” he said.
“But it would be better feeling if I could play more tests. But I have no regret to not play more Tests,” he also said.
“To me it is more important how much I performed there in those matches in Tests. I’ll try to do better things in two Tests what we have ahead. Many of our team’s players perform very well this year. Hopefully better things will be done in this series,” he added.
Drawing a comparison between the timeframe of the first Test and the last Test, Shakib said, “During my maiden Test I had no thinking what number of Test matches and how much days I will play for Bangladesh. At that time, there was one type of thinking. But there is nothing happened like that. Now the environment and responsibility are totally different. Actually everything is different.”
“The memorable Test was against England in 2016. Personally I think I struck 92 against West Indies. And the biggest achievement was 217 what I made against New Zealand. The best bowling was at Chittagong against New Zealand,” the 30-year-old all-rounder told in response to a query.
