Third US-funded ‘Makerspace’ opens in Chittagong
CHITTAGONG: Charge d’ Affaires of the US Embassy in Dhaka Joel Reifman officially inaugurated “The Makerspace” at Chittagong Independent University’s American Corner on Wednesday. While inaugurating the centre, Reifman said, “The Makerspace” is a centre where young learners will try to look for answers, solve problems as well as try to do something new through regular exercises.
This centre has Mindstorm EV3 lego set, Makerbot 3D printer and many more advanced technologies with which the students will be able to broaden their knowledge, he said, adding that so far three such Makerspaces have been established in Bangladesh including Chittagong. Mentioning that the number of Bangladeshi students in the US is increasing, the acting US ambassador in Dhaka said 6,500 Bangladeshi students in total are studying in the US. Bangladesh holds the 11th position in the list of countries with the most foreign students in the US.
Joel Reifman went to Chittagong on Wednesday for a two-day visit, which is his first visit outside Dhaka as the Charge d’ Affaires of the US Embassy in Dhaka.

Workshop on nature, challenges of journalism begins at BRUR
RANGPUR: A two-day workshop on ‘Journalism in News Agency: Nature and Challenges’ began at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) in the city yesterday.
The Department of Public Relations, Information and Publications of the university is organising the event at Heyat Mamud Bhaban on the campus.
Officials and employees of the Vice-chancellor’s office, Department of Public Relations, Information and Publication, teachers, journalists and students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism are participating.
The main objective of arranging the workshop is to expand space of practical knowledge, capacity and professional skills of the working journalists and students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism on the university.
Chief News Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Anisur Rahman is conducting different sessions of the two-day workshop that will end tomorrow at the same venue.
Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies of BRUR Professor Ferdous Rahman attended the inaugural session as chief guest with Administrator of Professor of the Department of Public Relations, Information and Publication Dr Sharifa Salowa Dina in the chair.

JU goes on 12-day Eid vacation
SAVAR: Jahangirnagar University (JU) is going to a 12-day vacation from August 27 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. All class and examinations will remain closed till September 7 while administrative activities will remain closed from August 29 to September 7, JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique told BSS yesterday.
The academic and administrative activities will resume on 10 September, he added.

RU goes 15-day Eid vacation from Saturday
The Rajshahi University (RU) will go on 14 days’ vacation for Eid-ul-Azha from Saturday. RU Public Relations Officer Prof Dr Povash Kumar Karmoker said in a press release yesterday. All the regular classes and examinations would remain closed during the period while all academic activities would be resumed on September10.
Hall provost council president and also Nawab Abdul Latif Hall Provost Prof Dr Bipul Kumar Biswas said all residential hall students asked to vacate their respective halls before 5pm on August 29 and halls will be opened at 10am on 9 September.

CU 9-day Eid holiday from Aug 29
CHITTAGONG: Chittagong University (CU) is going into vacation for nine days on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha on August 29 (Tuesday) next.
The vacation will continue till September 6 and all classes will remain closed during the vacation, said SM Akbar Hossain, chief of CU Academic Section.
However, all pre-scheduled examination would be held as per timetable and the classes will resume on September 7, he added.

‘Discussion on Bangabandhu’ held at IUB
To observe the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day 2017, the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a discussion on Wednesday on the IUB campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka, says a press release.
Professor of History, Dhaka University, Prof Syed Anwer Hossain attended the programme as the chief guest and spoke on the versatile life and contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mentioning the visionary role, courage and strong character of Bangabandhu, Prof Hossain underscored that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman not only crafted the dream of independence among all Bangladeshis but also illustrated future goals that the nation still needs to follow to succeed and become a prosperous country.
