Dhaka city ran into utter difficulties with another spell of heavy monsoon rain that recorded 126mm (five inches) of precipitation in 24 hours until 6am yesterday, leaving many streets flooded and clogged with stalled traffic.

As usual, the low lying areas of Mirpur to the north, and Jatrabari, Demra, Kajla, and Shanir Akhra to the south were inundated.

Commuters in these areas said that the congestions in the morning due to flooded streets continued to affect the traffic in the afternoon.

The residents of Kazipara and Mirpur had to struggle in the morning r to reach their workplaces in nearby Agargaon.

Students, especially children going to and returning from schools with their parents, suffered untold misery.

The traffic snarls that lasted well into the afternoon left people on their way towards the city centre struggling to get to their destinations. Some tried to skirt the trouble by summoning motorbike services through an App called ‘Pathao’, but found themselves in greater difficulties, as the bikes were unable to make any headway.

Drivers of certain bus services on the Mirpur-Motijheel route politely declined to negotiate the congestion even later in the afternoon, leaving many passengers to simply rely on their humble feet.

But braving it on foot was difficult for many, as the humidity was as high as 97 percent even at 6am. Next to Dhaka city, the rain totalled 108 mm in Feni and 97 mm in Sylhet.

The rain in the city was caused mainly by a resurgent monsoon that has not gone away but had becoming fairly active. More rainfall was expected in the coming days, Arif Hossain, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office said.

He said there would be rain in the next 72 hours. The intensity of the showers would start increasing over the next two days and could roll onto the weekends.
