The High Court yesterday stayed the trial proceedings of a defamation case filed against BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, reports UNB.
A division bench comprising Justice Md. Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah passed the order following a petition field by the BNP leader.
It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the proceeding of this case should not be quashed.
Advocate Joinul Abedin and Sogir Hossain Leon stood for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Sheikh A K M Moniruzzaman Kabir represented the government.
Earlier July 9, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court framed charges in this case against Mirza Fakhrul. After charge framing Fakhrul field a petition with the High Court seeking quashing the proceedings of the case.
Nur-E-Alam Siddique, vice-president of the central committee of Bangladesh Awami Matsayajibi League, filed the case with a court here on September 1 for his comment on the Prime Minister at a press conference.
According to the case statement, Fakhrul at a press conference at the BNP's central office at NayaPaltan on August 24 2014 said, "Sheikh Hasina herself is a murderer and her party, the Awami League, is known as the Murderers' Party. Her [Hasina's] hand is stained with the blood of hundreds of youths. There is no difference between the Awami League and the Pakistani HanadarBahini."
Online and print media outlets and television channels ran stories on the statement of the BNP leader.
However, Fakhrul secured bail in the case later.
