The BPL governing council decided to cancel the grand opening ceremony of this year’s tournament, mulling the sufferings of the flood-affected people in the country.
In a meeting of the Governing Council on Tuesday, they took the decision to donate the expenditure of the ceremony to the flood-affected people.
Floods have waterlogged almost 356 Upazilas in 20 districts, including northeastern districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona, northern districts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Bogra, Sirajganj and the hill tract district Rangamati.
So far, 89 flood-related deaths have been reported. Highway traffic has been severely hampered due to the floods. Rail service to Dinajpur has been shut down.
“There will be no opening ceremony as the most of the people of the country are flood-affected right now. They have been in indescribable sufferings at the moment. Considering their sufferings we cancelled the programme,” said BCB director Sheikh Sohel.
BCB media and communications committee chairman Jalal Yunus, also the member of the BPL governing council said, “We are thinking to donate the money to the flood-affected people instead of arranging the opening ceremony.”
Sohel also informed that the Barisal Bulls could not take part in this edition as they didn’t fill the financial condition.
The fifth edition of the BPL is scheduled to begin on November 2.
