Facing Bangladesh spinners

Aussies’ devise strategy

Sports Reporter

How serious is the Australian batsmen to neutralize Bangladesh spinners in the series is evidenced in their special practice session yesterday at the National Academy Ground in Mirpur

Considering that the Bangladesh spinners tendency to bowl stump-to-stump line, they want to make sure than their block is in perfect order. And hence Australia began batting in the nets without their front pad on. It is a tactic they had experimented with during Justin Langer's tenure as batting coach in 2012.

"I think the main thing is to basically use your bat," Maxwell explained. "If you don't have the safety of your front pad, it makes you get your leg out of the way and actually use your bat. I think it is more about refining your defense and making sure you trust the fact that you can hit the ball and not hoping that your pads are there just to save you.

"It is more about guys who are hitting the stumps regularly and Bangladesh do that really well. They bowl stump to stump and put pressure on your defense so I suppose that's one thing we will work on. I did a lot of it back home. A lot of my practice revolves around defence and expanding from there. I haven't done so much of it since I have been here but I am sure I will get a chance before the game starts."

An aggressive batsman like Glenn Maxwell also blocked numerous deliveries in the practice session, a thing that indicated their seriousness level.

“It was spinning a fair bit. As we showed in India, we probably prefer those wickets where the ball beats our defense and we are able to play the line. It probably doesn’t bother us as much as when it is inconsistent spin or when it skids on. When it spins consistently you can hold your defense and trust the ball is going to miss the outside edge.

Australia had a week-long practice session that ended with the three-day intra-squad match in Darwin. It’s a practice session that Maxwell thought gave the much confidence.

“The wickets here are similar to what we faced in Darwin where it was perfect. We put extreme conditions in Darwin with the wickets where we made it ridiculously tough to bat on and guys tested themselves really well during that week. I think the guys are more than well equipped to handle whatever comes their way in the first Test.”
